Dr. Mirle Rabinowitz Bussell is the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at UC San Diego, which offers an undergraduate degree in Real Estate and Development. UC San Diego launched a new undergraduate degree in Real Estate and Development in Fall of 2018, and it is the first degree of its kind in the University of California system. Dr. Bussell’s research interests include private foundations' involvement in comprehensive community development, quality of life indicators and planning in disenfranchised urban neighborhoods, affordable housing, homelessness, comparative international research, healthy aging and the built environment, and local community economic development. She focuses on applied research that bridges theory and practice and has over 25 years of experience in the area of community development. She is the author of the award-winning book Catalysts for Change: 21st Century Philanthropy and Community Development (Routledge, 2013) with Maria Martinez-Cosio.
Bussell is dedicated to undergraduate planning and real estate and development education and is a recipient of the Barbara F. and Paul D. Saltman Distinguished Teaching Award from UC San Diego. She is involved with many local and national planning and real estate development organizations and serves in several leadership roles. Prior to her academic career, she worked for a nonprofit community development corporation in upstate New York. She earned her Ph.D. in Urban Planning from UCLA, a Master of Regional Planning from Cornell University and a BA in Architecture from UC Berkeley.
